In 2008, Northwestern State University asked me to design collateral for their annual Christmas Gala, one of the major performance events of the academic year. Starting from the content of that year’s Gala — predominantly featuring jazz compositions by Duke Ellington — I built a collateral system intended to combine a wintry elegance with the hot, energetic feeling of jazz and big-band. The eight-page program is printed in black and varnish on the exterior to once again tap into the austere, elegant feel of winter; but on opening the reader is buffeted with energy and color and rhythm.
I was also responsible for producing a 24″x36″ promotional poster and set of souvenir buttons to be given out at the door.
